Why test before you're ready to certify

Early in a product's development, designs are still moving, requirements are still being confirmed, and formal compliance testing is often premature. Running a full qualification programme against a fixed standard at this stage tells you whether a design passes or fails. It does not tell you why, or what to change.

Pre-compliance and investigative testing answers a different question: how does the product actually behave, where do the margins sit, and what needs attention before the design is locked down. It is exploratory by design. A test programme built around these questions can be adjusted as findings come in, rather than run once against a fixed pass/fail criterion.

Axis offers non-accredited R&D testing across vibration, shock, temperature, humidity, and corrosion. It runs on the same equipment, in the same facility, and by the same engineers as our UKAS-accredited work. The difference is not in capability; it is in how the programme is structured. Accredited testing demonstrates compliance to a defined standard. Pre-compliance testing is built around your questions, not the standard's.

How early-stage testing is typically used

Pre-compliance and investigative testing is commonly used to:

  • explore design margins and sensitivities before committing to a final build
  • identify potential failure modes while changes are still cheap to make
  • compare design iterations or build variants against each other
  • establish realistic environmental limits and operating envelopes
  • reduce the number of surprises, and the cost of fixing them, during later qualification testing

A design that fails during formal qualification testing is a design that fails after tooling, documentation, and timelines are already committed. Finding the same weakness three months earlier, on a prototype, costs a redesign. Finding it during accredited testing can cost a missed delivery date.

Test levels, durations, and profiles are set to explore behaviour rather than to demonstrate compliance against a fixed standard. That means levels can be increased beyond a standard's requirement to find where a design actually starts to struggle, or run at reduced severity to compare variants quickly. The programme is shaped by what you need to learn.

Practical insight during testing

Our test engineers work on both accredited and R&D testing day to day, and that experience carries over. During an early-stage programme, they are able to flag things worth a second look as testing progresses: an unexpected resonance, a fixing showing signs of fatigue earlier than expected, or a response that suggests the failure mode isn't where the design assumed it would be.

This is not a separate consultancy service. It is observation grounded in what the equipment is doing on the rig, from engineers who run this equipment against formal standards every week and know what a normal response looks like.

From development to qualification

Pre-compliance testing is frequently the first stage of a longer programme, not a one-off exercise. Findings from early-stage testing feed directly into design decisions: confirming a fixing method, setting a realistic operating temperature range, or ruling out a failure mode before it becomes expensive to fix.

When the design is ready to move into formal UKAS-accredited qualification testing, that groundwork carries forward. Test parameters are already understood, likely problem areas have already been addressed, and the qualification programme is less likely to surface something unexpected at a stage where changes are costly.
